Our Vision

In our community, older adults with limited financial resources overcome barriers and age with dignity in the settings of their choice.

Our History

Saunders House—originally known as The Old Man’s Home of Philadelphia—was founded in West Philadelphia in 1864 to provide the warmth of home and support to older men with limited financial resources. In 1960, the Home expanded its mission to serve women as well, and in 1973, relocated to a modern setting in Wynnewood, Montgomery County.

For more than 150 years, Saunders House offered housing, care, and community to older adults facing economic hardship—evolving alongside the field of elder care
while remaining rooted in compassion and dignity.

Saunders House Foundation was established in 2022 with proceeds from the sale of Saunders House. The Foundation carries on its legacy: working to ensure that older adults in our community can thrive, and investing in organizations that prioritize wellbeing, independence, choice, and connection. In 2024, Saunders House Foundation awarded its first grants to six nonprofit organizations
that advance our shared vision for the region.
